Problem

Airline apps are built for phones. At the gate you need the essentials without pulling your phone out.

What I did

Modular cards with one decision per screen, high-contrast dark UI and large tap targets.

Outcome

Gate, boarding and booking details readable in a glance on a 1.5–2 inch screen.

Goals and the glance flow

  • A glance-friendly UI for 1.5″ to 2″ screens.
  • Critical flight information in under two seconds.
  • Battery-efficient OLED dark mode.
  • Modular cards that isolate one task at a time.
  • Works on round and square watch faces.
User flow

  • Decision

At the airport

  1. Start: Haptic alert: gate change or delay
  2. Screen: One card: flight, gate, time
  3. Decision: One decision
    • Tap for details
    • Swipe to dismiss
  4. End: Phone stays in the pocket

Designing for a glance

The goal was critical flight information in under two seconds. Each screen shows only the essential data, in battery-friendly dark mode, with large high-contrast buttons, and haptics deliver timely nudges.

All watch screens: passcode, notifications, home, recent booking, profile, bookings, flight details, itinerary.
  • Fitts’s law: large tappable areas reduce effort.
  • Hick’s law: one decision per screen.
  • Jakob’s law: patterns borrowed from boarding passes and watch apps.

Reflection

Designing for a watch is ruthless prioritisation. Minimalism here isn’t fewer elements, it’s only the essential ones.
